Meet the Staff


From beginning diver to professional diver certifications, SSA has the PADI course and instructor necessary to provide you with quality training. At SSA, we maintain and promote the highest standards in our diver education and diver safety.

   Rusty Doebler is a PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer at SSA. If you don't find Rusty at the shop or teaching in the pool, he is surely out diving somewhere just for fun. While he enjoys cold water diving and tech diving, he especially enjoys wreck diving off the eastern seaboard while filming wrecks, sharks and other aquatic wonders. Rusty has a passion for teaching and loves to dive with divers of any skill level whether it involves training or just for fun. Just ask if you need a buddy for a dive, chances are good he would love to go! Rusty is one of SSA's gear techs and teaches the following courses: Open water, advanced open water, rescue diver, divemaster, master diver, EFR (CPR, AED and first aid), enriched air, search and recovery, deep, sidemount, drysuit, DPV's, underwater navigation, wreck, peak performance buoyancy and night divng.

Jim Bean is the director of Sullivan County's Emergency Management Agency and the water rescue team leader for the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew. Staffing, training, directing and coordinating a team of search and recovery divers for Sullivan County is a testament to Jim's skills as a leader. Certifying divers for over a decade and serving with the Kingsport Lifesaving Crew for 25 years, Jim brings diving expertise and experience to SSA's instructional staff. Sub Surface Adventures is thrilled to have Jim as an exclusive member of its teaching staff.   

   Zachary Machuga began diving at 17 under NAUI for a search and rescue team with a volunteer fire department. Wanting to experience more he joined the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman. While stationed in Guantanamo Bay Cuba he had the opportunity to continue his training with PADI. He completed his Rescue Diver, Divemaster and Instructor certifications. After certifying many students, in some of the best waters in the world, he moved to Jacksonville NC where he continued diving, living and working on boats. After moving to TN, he joined our team and has continued to lead students to the life changing world of SCUBA diving.

Capt. Derek Metcalf is a Squadron Commander with the Civil Air Patrol, USAF Auxiliary where he most recently received the Lifesaving award. He also received the Humanitarian award from the Greeneville Exchange Club. Derek has served the community for the last 14 years as a firefighter with the Greeneville Fire Department and has served for three years on the board of Directors for the Greene County American Red Cross, for eight years in the Boy Scouts on the Nolachuckey District Committee , and is an EMT/IV technician, a HazMat specialist, an instructor trainer, a lifeguard instructor, and an emergency services instructor with the Red Cross. Derek is the head gear technician at SSA. We are proud to have Derek as an exclusive member of our instructional staff.   

   Dale DeBoer is a PADI Dive Master and Discover Scuba Diving Leader. He can be found helping around the shop and assisting people in their training. Dale enjoys being part of the excitement divers get as they progress in their training. Dale has lived in the tri-cities area for 22 years after moving here from Oklahoma. He spent 7 ½ years in the US Marine Corps and was on the dive team for Jerry Hall’s world record dive in August 2013. Dale loves all types of diving with wreck diving being his favorite. We are proud to have Dale on our training and sales team.

Master Diver and Divemaster Roger Adams has a well documented record as a master logistician. He has worked in the transportation and logistics field for twenty three years, militarily and commercially. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his logistical expertise in the performance of his duties as the 1030TH Engineer Battalion Logistical Officer during Desert Storm. Roger has proved invaluable with his expertise during complicated training sessions with logistical challenges. He is a veteran diver that is the perfect compliment to the SSA instructional staff. We are proud to have Roger on our training team.

Divemaster Jennifer Fleenor   

   PADI Divemaster Jennifer Howell was certified through SSA. Because of her love of water, eagerness to learn, dedication, and strong will to strive for her goals, she worked her way from an open water diver to divemaster in 10 months. After becoming a Padi scuba diver she has experienced diving in location like Florida, North Carolina, Mexico, Bahamas, Dominican Republic and local lakes and quarries. She enjoys teaching and assisting with students and hopes that they too will be able to create amazing memories and stories with their friends and family through scuba diving. Outside of diving Jennifer's full time occupation is a Veterinary Technician. She works alongside her husband as a very dedicated youth leaders in their church. She enjoys running, snowboarding, hiking, traveling, and photography. We are pleased to have Jennifer on our staff.

Deborah has recently started her SCUBA adventure and is excited to be a part of the dive community. You will frequently see Deborah around the shop or on dive outings helping with students and logistics.
